Article Summary

The procedure to upgrade an existing CTERA Portal installation is dependent on whether the upgrade involves upgrading the portal software or both the software and the portal image.

As a general rule, new releases include both image and software upgrades and CTERA strongly recommends that you upgrade both. The release notes for each release specifies whether a portal image upgrade is required in addition to a portal software upgrade.

Note

Folder groups with a block size greater than 4MB are not supported from CTERA Portal 6.0.x. If you have an existing portal with folder groups greater than 4MB, the upgrade will fail. Before starting the upgrade, move files from a folder group with a block size greater than 4MB to a different folder group with a block size less than 4MB. The folder group size is configured in the settings for the portal.

The CTERA Portal software can be upgraded as described in Upgrading the Portal Software.

The CTERA Portal image can be upgraded as described in Upgrading the Portal Image Via the Command Line.

Note

CTERA recommends installing a new image and software with the help of CTERA Support (http://www.ctera.com/support).

Customers Without Internet Access: Upgrading the Portal Image

The portal image requires packages for enhanced syslog functionality. If you are upgrading a CTERA Portal image from 6.0.x, during the image upgrade, these packages are downloaded from the Internet and automatically installed. If you do not have access to the Internet, you can install these packages manually, using the archive file provided with the image installation file.

To install the syslog enhanced functionality archive:

  1. Upgrade the portal image with the latest image file, as described in Upgrading the Portal Image and Software, but do not run the setup wizard.
  2. Copy the archive file, exported_images.tar.gz, to a local folder on the portal machine.
Note

The file is available for download from CTERA support.

  1. Run the following CLI command on all servers (including main, Replica, DB, and Preview servers): portal-syslog-client load_images images_archive_path
where images_archive_path is the path to the local folder where you copied the archive file.
  2. Run the setup wizard.

Troubleshooting

If the setup wizard was run prior to loading the new packages, an error message is generated. To resolve it, run the CLI portal-syslog-client load_images images_archive_path and restart all servers.

Note

If you do not run the CLI command, the enhanced syslog functionality will not work and anerror message is generated . For these reasons it is recommended to run the command, however if you don’t, apart from the error message, there is no impact on portals where syslog functionality is not used.
