Article Summary

What to back up and when to schedule backups is managed is configured in the device connected to the CTERA Portal. After a backup is created in the CTERA Portal, you can manage the backup from the CTERA Portal, including viewing content, copying content, for the current backup and for previous backups in addition to restoring a backup.

Passphrase Protecting Backups

When you first connect an agent or a CTERA Edge Filer to the CTERA Portal, as part of the initial configuration, you can specify a passphrase to protect your backups. For example when first connecting an agent running on a Windows platform to a CTERA Portal:

You can use an automatically generated encryption key or set your own passphrase.

Note: You can only set the passphrase when setting up the cloud backup for the first time.If a passphrase is set, then when trying to access the backups for that device, you are prompted for the passphrase:

If you want a passphrase for additional security to your backups, you must set up the passphrase when first connecting the device to the CTERA Portal.
Note: Remember to keep the passphrase in a safe place. If lost, it cannot be recovered. You can change this passphrase, as described in Change a Device Backup's Passphrase. However, you cannot create a passphrase after you have started to backup folders and files from the device to the CTERA Portal.
